CASE STUDY : Ratzlaff House

This amazing owner-built underground home is truly unique. The home immediately shows a striking combination of landscape and terrain design,  scale of construction, and intricate architectural elements. The interior continues the trend with an opulent-if-not-almost-gratuitous mixture of classical wood furnishings (the owner is a woodworker), and even features a secret door! I could go on, but please see the owner’s website (http://www.ourundergroundhome.com) for a much better tour!

CASE STUDY : Hacienda De La Paz

This mansion is a little off – the opulent luxury goes down in floors instead of up. This $53 million behemoth, the brainchild of it’s owner – a shrimp importing magnate, features doznes of rooms including 2 full size tennis courts (one underground, and one on the grounds).

CASE STUDY : Atomitat

The inspiration for several of the pioneering underground homes of the cold war era, this amazing home was the pinnacle of underground home building in the 60s. Built to nuclear bunker specifications, the house served first as a showcase, and then as a residence to underground home legend Jay Swayze of the dallas texas area. The house was featured in the world’s fair of 1964 as a design innovation in the tide of the red scare.
