CAST STUDY : Rothell Home

A large, well-protected terradome earth sheltered home

FROM THE ORIGINAL OWNER:

We have lived in this home for 27 years. We bought it without any
information or knowledge about the house. It was about 2 years old
then. After much research and questioning we learned to let the house
do what it does best and we have very comfortable since. It is a very
solid home and shows almost none of the normal wear and tear of the
elements that above ground homes experience. About 7 years ago we did
renovate the inside and made it handicap accessible although it
already had wide doors and was ground level. Up keep on the home has
been very little over the years.

– Alva and Shirley Rothell

UPDATE 11/10/2017:

The rothell home has apparently changed hands, and is no longer for sale! Congrats to the lucky new owner, Bill Ellis, who says “ I have learned over the last two years waking up every morning ‘six feet under'”

CASE STUDY : Shreve House

A classic terradome example, this earth  home in Franklin NE is a great modern addition to the underground home directory.

A message from the owner, Leigh Shreve:

“bought this home on 150 acres about 2 years ago. Although it is not as energy efficient as we hoped (probably due to the fireplace) it has lots of light, large spacious rooms. Most people drive by even if they are looking for our home and don’t even see it.”

CASE STUDY : Irvin Home

A pristine suburban underground home, the irvan home uses the terra-dome building system to great effect. With a unique brick facade, and full earth berming, the home really shows what you can do with earth sheltering in a very practical package.

CASE STUDY : Walton Home

This exemplary example of the terra-dome form construction method serves as a model of building an earth-sheltered home without financing. The Walton home is a wonderful DIY story that ends with a great home (note- with a minor leak, but otherwise 2 thumbs up)
