CASE STUDY : Chez Hélène-Amboise Troglodyte

An amazing example of an affordable, long-lived modern cave home – the Chez Hélène-Amboise Troglodyte is a rags-to-riches story of a home blossoming within a family. A cave home acquired in modern times for One Euro at auction from a family member, this beautifully rustic cave home was renovated for just under $50k. And even better – one room of the renovated cave house is now for rental essentially as a bed-and-breakfast through AirBNB!

CAST STUDY : Rothell Home

A large, well-protected terradome earth sheltered home

We have lived in this home for 27 years. We bought it without any
information or knowledge about the house. It was about 2 years old
then. After much research and questioning we learned to let the house
do what it does best and we have very comfortable since. It is a very
solid home and shows almost none of the normal wear and tear of the
elements that above ground homes experience. About 7 years ago we did
renovate the inside and made it handicap accessible although it
already had wide doors and was ground level. Up keep on the home has
been very little over the years.

– Alva and Shirley Rothell

UPDATE 11/10/2017:

The rothell home has apparently changed hands, and is no longer for sale! Congrats to the lucky new owner, Bill Ellis, who says “ I have learned over the last two years waking up every morning ‘six feet under'”

CASE STUDY : Ratzlaff House

This amazing owner-built underground home is truly unique. The home immediately shows a striking combination of landscape and terrain design,  scale of construction, and intricate architectural elements. The interior continues the trend with an opulent-if-not-almost-gratuitous mixture of classical wood furnishings (the owner is a woodworker), and even features a secret door! I could go on, but please see the owner’s website ( for a much better tour!

CASE STUDY : Shreve House

A classic terradome example, this earth  home in Franklin NE is a great modern addition to the underground home directory.

A message from the owner, Leigh Shreve:

“bought this home on 150 acres about 2 years ago. Although it is not as energy efficient as we hoped (probably due to the fireplace) it has lots of light, large spacious rooms. Most people drive by even if they are looking for our home and don’t even see it.”

While not a single residence, this townhouse development in minneapolis is a collective selling point for the benefits of underground houses in an urban environment. Built with a large facing towards a very active roadway, the occupants apparently report a very quiet living environment and fairly stable temperature in minnesota winters. (See case study source book for more details).
